Cactus Beach to Fowlers Bay
our journey so far – Nullarbor here we come!
We drove through to Fowlers Bay today – another long and corrugated dirt road to the beach from the main highway. We decided to head here thinking it might be really nice and we would stay for a couple of days, but once again the caravan park isn’t what we had in mind, and the Bay itself is okay, but more for fishermen than for us beach lovers.
So we are getting the caravan set up for our trek across to WA through the Nullarbor and across the Great Australian Bight , filling our water tanks, replenishing the battery and downloading some movies to watch on my laptop!
We had a walk around Fowlers Bay, its quite historic here, it used to be a whaling station and around the tiny village are signposts showing illustrations and explanations of the buildings that are still here, and used to be here. The Southern Right Whale (called the ‘Right’ whale as they used to float after they were harpooned and had heaps of oil so hence they were the ‘right’ ones to catch) return to the bay every year between May and October to give birth and nurse their young. Didn’t spot any when we climbed up the huge sand dunes and had a look across the bay unfortunately…here are some piccies:
I had to laugh at the septic tank empty truck that came in to the caravan park - had a number of slogans written on the side of the tank:
'Yesterday's meals on wheels'
'Full of politicians promises'
'Nugget express'
So we are heading off in the morning…we are going to drive through to Eucla on the SA/WA border and stay there the night, then spend 2 days travelling to get to Esperance where we plan on staying put till next Friday when we head to Kalgoorlie and get ourselves sorted in the hospital flat. Telstra service seems like it might be a bit hit and miss over the next few days – try not to miss us too much :)
