Farm Beach to Cactus Beach – Stonehenge look-alike and a snake!

 cactus
our journey so far – 1350 km down – 1312 km to go (half way….)

We headed off from Farm Beach this morning, a little disappointed given the drive it took to get there over a dirt road.  Maybe it’s that we aren’t appreciating other peoples idea of a lovely beach and setting…certainly the guy that wrote the descriptions in the Camp 6 book seems to have a better eye for beauty than we do.
We did intend to stop off at a beach not that far along the coastline, however we stopped instead in another place further along that had been recommended to Mal (Haslam) -  but I was not impressed with the ‘carpark’ to park in (which was already nearly full) so ended up driving through to Cactus Beach instead – a very long, hot day (got up to 36 degrees today) for all 3 of us!

We headed off to see Murphy’s Haystacks on our way through to our destination.  A bit of a natural oddity in the middle of a farmers paddock and a rival for the famous Stonehenge I reckon!  We weren’t disappointed here….amazing stones and even better than Stonehenge as we only had to pay $2 each to walk out and around, or through them, or we could even touch them!  Here are some photos and explanations of what they are

Pretty cool ah!

We also saw up close one of the lizard things we have seen on the road all along our journey – and we confess we have squished a few as they do seem to love the road – particularly that patch we seem to be driving in….here is a live one up close

We ended up heading through to Cactus Beach with a short stop at Smokey Bay (not bad).  The drive to Cactus Beach was a very long corrugated (in places) dirt road…the caravan handled it okay though we ‘shook the shit out of her’ - when we opened her up a few things were on the floor, but nothing broken!  Along the dirt road out here was a road splitting a salt lake from the ocean..the salt lake was a vivid pink colour and the other side was lovely and blue…

Cactus Beach is actually a surf beach.  The campground is pretty interesting – sprawls out in between the brush land with salt flats for roads..there are quite a few people camped out here – and we did plan on spending a bit of time here, that was until I saw my very FIRST SNAKE in the wild….okay it was a little one, but it was a poisonous brown one…and if there were little ones there were bound to be mummy and daddy big ones…..so now I am totally paranoid about Chip being anywhere near the scrub…..here is a photo of our camp site

    1. Chip didn't even notice the snake on the ground even though we both just about trod on it! Guess they are in Kalgoorlie...don't worry we will be watching out for them!
