Killarney to Tramore

We set off early this morning and headed to Blarney - famous of course for its castle.

On the way we heard the story of the potatoe famine in Ireland in the late 1800s - pretty shocking and depressing. To cheer us up afterwards our guide put on a CD of Hal Roach an Irish comedian - he is hilarious.

As we were early we beat the rushes to the castle. Mal and I climbed up the narrow stairs to reach  the top of the castle (no mean feat) and kissed the  blarney stone which is no mean feat either. Had to be the Irish that would make it popular to kiss a stone at the top of a castle hanging underneath the edge of the castle. To kiss it you have to lie on your back lean your shoulders and head backwards gripping on to two rails while a (very goodlooking) Irish lad supports you and you kiss the stone. I was more put off by the thought of everyone elses germs (great way to start a pandemic really) than leaning upside down - but its something that had to be done and I am sure my blog will now be more 'eloquent' - afterall it is the stone of eloquence.

After lunch we headed off towards Tramore. We passed through Cork on the way which is the second biggest city in Ireland. Its main industry is pharmaceuticals - infact they make a lot of Viagra!! Given the name (Cork) and after just having kissed the blarney stone I couldn't resist writing this limerick:

There was an old man from Cork
Who had a problem erecting his dork
So he brought some viagra
So he could 'get at her'
Poor woman she can now hardly walk!!

We then travelled slong the southern coast towards Tramore. We stopped off at Youghal and had the yummiest Irish coffee in the local pub (late back to the bus too - oops)!

Have to share this hilarious limerick we heard yesterday:

There was a young woman from Trat
Who had triplets named Tat,  Bob and Pat
She had fun with the breeding
But when it came to the feeding
She found she had no tit for Tat!
