Well I told you that we were headed to our next 'burg' the other day but in fact we were headed to our next 'heim'!
Wertheim is a small town which sits where the rivers Tauber and Main meet in the northernmost corner of the German state Baden Wurtemberg. The river often floods and the shops and houses are basically set up so that the bottom story can be evacuated and flood. In the photo below shows Mal standing next to their HW tide marks
The town is full of old buildings dating back to the 16th century or earlier - they are so quaint! There are a couple that are tall, long but very narrow....interesting.
In the Market Square is the Market Fountain which used to be the centre of the water system....right next to the cemetry would you believe!
We took the little tram ride up to the Wertheimer Burg which is the ruins of the oldest large stone fortress in Southern Germany. It gave amazing views over the town and the river but quite a hike to get up to the highest point and by the time we got there not only were we stuffed, but the weather had started to turn pretty nasty as well...the view at the very top was well worth it though. The walk down was incredibly quick!
We came across the house of the local midwife and I had to go back and take a photo of me outside....
We spent a bit of time just free walking around the town after we had the guided tour. It really has such a nice quaint cosy feel to it.
We have been surprised by how many camping/caravanning parks we have passed along the Main River. Some of them very large with what seems like a lot of permanently set up caravans with annexes - the annexes are very different to what you would see in NZ or Oz...all plastic windows out the front with opening out the front not the sides.
After dinner on the ship they had a local band come and play and it was fantastic. We had almost everyone on the ship in there and up dancing for the first time on the cruise - it was loads of fun. I stayed away from the white russians so didn't have to sleep on the floor of the cabin.....
