Wurzburg Frankonia Germany

This morning we pulled up to Wurzburg, another lovely German city.  Population of 150,000 (about 26,000 Uni students) - very damaged in WW2.  There are 39 churches in the city.  This is a wine producing region (mainly white wines and a lot of reisling) - infact they have the largest winery in Germany here.

Our ship is parked only 10 minutes walking distance from the city centre.

In the morning we went on the organised tour of the Residenz a huge residence of 132 rooms built for the Catholic bishop way back when.  Now used for concerts, uni lectures and sightseers....hugely extravangant but unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos inside.  Infact I found the staff working in the building treated us a bit like threats (no backpacks or big bags allowed, no photos, all signs and explanations in German only) - although by the number of tourists groups there they would be making a fortune out of us!

After the tour of several rooms of the Residenz we walked around the gardens which were lovely and then we went down under the buildings to the wine cellar.  Amazing cellar with barrel after barrel lining both sides of the walls.  The barrels can hold 100,000 litres of wine!   Each had a candle burning infront..these used to be used to detect build up of CO2 and if they went out they got out smartly first, and then knew it was time to 'air' the cellar.  The wine was delicious (even at 10am) ...it is bottled in round bottles which are only allowed to be used in Frankonia.

After lunch back on ship we went for a walk in to the city to explore.  There was an optional tour today of a town nearby but we wanted to have some free time on our own.  The city was lovely with cobblestones again and lovely churches and baroc architecture.

If the weather holds up we are going to head out to a restaurant for dinner tonight - there are a few quite close to where our ship is docked - just for a change from onboard dining (although there is nothing to moan about with the food and wine at all).  We set sail just before midnight tonight for our next 'burg'!!!
